The In-Between Place
In April 2019, I travelled to Morocco for an artist residency. The place of residence was L’Ane Vert, an ecolodge for sustainable tourism and cultural exchange in Tafedna, district of Essaouira. I researched this place in regards to different layers of cultural exchange. I learned about alternative ways of living, getting immersed into the local culture as well as meeting people from all over the world. L’Ane Vert is a place in flux — a coming and going of so many different people. So many faces, so many stories. Attracting guests from various backgrounds, origins and generations. The people who come and go, arrive and depart, meet and separate. What is it that connects them to this place?
When I arrived at L’Ane Vert, I brought with me two cotton embroidered blankets. For me, a blanket has a connotation of home; it can be a comforter in a new environment. I used the blankets as a tool to start a conversation, an exchange. The blankets became a connecting fabric between myself and the other person.
Thank you Lynn, Sonia, Yasmin, Bolmar and Sow.
